Matte Kranz wrote, and performs in, this world premiere — a physical tragicomedy directed by Egor Trukhin, whose previous work includes a wordless piece at La MaMa. Two janitors return each day to clean the same persistently filthy room, no water supplied — one has made a kind of peace with the repetition, the other hasn't. The production incorporates multiple endings, with its form shifting from performance to performance.
The show positions itself within the European Theatre of the Absurd — Beckett and Ionesco are the obvious ancestors — filtered through clowning, improvisation, and the body rather than language. It plays in the third-floor loft at The Players Theatre, up two flights of stairs with no elevator — which, for a piece this physical and this intimate, is probably the right room. We haven't reviewed it yet, so no verdict from this corner.
Is there something specific you want to know before you decide — the room, the running time, what kind of audience tends to find this rewarding, or how it stacks up against what else is open right now?
