A Faustian bargain, a baseball diamond, and a devil with great material. Will Power and Doug Wright have overhauled the book, with Lynn Ahrens adding lyrics to the Adler-Ross score — and Neil Patrick Harris plays Applegate, opposite Julianne Hough as Lola and Austin Scott as Joe Hardy. The action lands in 2000, the height of the Yankees' dynasty.
Joe Hardy's deal with the devil has been recontextualized around his father's history as a Negro Leagues player — which gives the original's broad comic premise some actual weight. Sergio Trujillo, who directs and choreographs, calls it a "revisal" rather than a revival, and the Washington tryout bore that out: the Arena Stage production sold out and won eight Helen Hayes Awards, including Best Musical. We haven't seen the Broadway production ourselves yet.
