Bruce Norris's play — a Drama Critics' Circle winner now making its Broadway debut — puts four convicted sex offenders in a group home and then sends a survivor to the door: Joe Mantello directs what sounds, on paper, like an evening designed to make the audience deeply uncomfortable with their own sympathies. Critics haven't filed yet, so there's no verdict here. What do you want to know before you decide?
Winner of the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play, Bruce Norris’s profane, disruptive, and heartbreaking Downstate finally arrives on Broadway in a strictly limited 12-week engagement, directed by three-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello. Four men, living together uneasily in the pressure-cooker of a state-sanctioned group home, have been convicted of sex crimes against minors. They have served their prison sentences, but enjoying the freedom they believe they have earned proves both elusive and treacherous. When a survivor unexpectedly arrives and demands to confront his abuser, the encounter triggers a catastrophic chain reaction that cannot be contained.
