From the NY Times Top Ten of 2026: Another of the finest shows in the first half of the year was Bedlam Theater’s stripped-down “Othello,” directed by Eric Tucker. Without changing costumes, four multitasking actors played all the Venetians and Moors and Cypriots tangled up in the evil Iago’s plot to drive his general, Othello, insane. Tucker’s directorial inventiveness made the whole show a delight, but I was struck most by Susannah Millonzi, when she was playing Iago’s wife, Emilia. Late in the show, as Emilia and Desdemona (Susannah Hoffman) discussed their (femicidal) husbands, Millonzi spat out an embittered monologue about men’s hatred of women. Her pitch-dark fury upended my perception of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Over the centuries, much time has been spent puzzling out Iago’s motives, but why do we bother? Emilia is clear — in her eyes, allmen are vicious.
