Ionesco's 1959 absurdist play about conformity's slow, species-level grip gets its first Broadway revival since its premiere in 1961, directed by Diane Paulus and produced by Roundabout. Tatiana Maslany, Tony Shalhoub, and John Turturro lead as small-town friends who find themselves facing a world-shaking new movement — and, gradually, becoming it.

The production had its critically acclaimed world premiere this past summer at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard, with Turturro and Maslany reprising their roles and Shalhoub stepping in for the part Paul Giamatti played in Cambridge. What the play asks — where exactly the line sits between neighbor and herd — lands differently every decade. This cast gives you three people who know how to make that discomfort feel personal rather than allegorical.
